Chapter Twelve

“WHAT DO YOU THINK?” Chloe asked me.

I turned my head, opening one eye. “I think laying out on the beach beats working any day. Even if we do have a pretty sweet job.” Working for Chloe’s mom was great, and the fact that we could eat as much ice cream as we wanted only sweetened the deal, but the beach was where my heart was, and today was a nice, warm, sunny day.

She chuckled. “Agreed.”

We had brought a beach umbrella, but we were sitting out in the sun. It took forever for me to get even a little bit of color. Well, a color other than pink, but Chloe was an easy tanner. I envied her. I looked anemic after a day in the sun, while she looked healthy and glowing.

A seagull hopped nearby, eyeing us and hoping for a treat of some kind, but we hadn’t brought any food. We only intended to hang out here for an hour or two before catching a movie. I waved it away.

I sighed and scooted back under the umbrella before I looked like a lobster, and Chloe did the same, although she didn’t need to. Then I spotted someone familiar approaching. It was Caden Brown, and he had a girl with him.

“Well, hello, Ladies,” he said, grinning. “Fancy running into the two of you out here.”

“We’re here whenever we get the chance,” Chloe said.

Caden introduced his girlfriend, Trisha Diaz, a bronzed beauty that I had never met before.

“So, what’s going on, Caden?” I asked.

Caden was blond and had a head full of curly hair. Not tight curls, but the loose kind that a girl loves to run her fingers through. He had always run in the most popular circles in high school, but he had always been nice to almost everyone else.

He shrugged. “We thought we would come out and catch some rays. Maybe do a little surfing later.”

I nodded. “How’s your mom doing?” I knew what his answer would be before he said it, but that wasn’t going to stop me from asking.

He scowled. “Oh, she’s still down about my idiot cousin. I told her he wasn’t worth getting upset about, but she’s going to do it anyway.”

“Losing someone you care about is hard,” Chloe said.

I watched Trisha’s face. She frowned when Caden talked about his cousin. At least she had sense enough to understand what his mother was going through, even if Caden didn’t. That, or he just didn’t care, and I was pretty sure it was the latter.

He rolled his eyes. “Look, I feel bad that my mom feels bad, but I refuse to feel bad that my idiot cousin is dead.”

“Why?” I asked. “Why do you dislike him so much?”

He shook his head. “It was a lifetime of everyone feeling sorry for him. There was no reason for it. If he wanted to change his life, he could have. He could have gone to college, he could have done anything to give himself a better life, but he always depended on others to feel sorry for him and give him what he wanted.
